Old Land Rovers do not fear winter so much as reveal every corner you cut in autumn. A tired battery, weak glow plugs and dilute coolant all hide happily in mild weather and then conspire on the first hard frost. Twenty minutes now is the difference between a first-turn start and a jump-lead morning. Here is the checklist we run on customer trucks each November.
A diesel asks the most of its battery on the coldest morning of the year. Load-test it rather than trusting a resting voltage, clean and grease the terminals, and on a Td5 or TDCi check the glow-plug relay actually clicks — a lazy relay turns a healthy engine into a reluctant one. If it has been four winters since the plugs were changed, change them before the frost, not after.
Test the coolant with a hydrometer, not by eye — weak antifreeze freezes, cracks and corrodes. While you are there, confirm the viscous fan frees off, the hoses are supple and the heater actually gets hot, because a blocked matrix that you ignore in October becomes a foggy, freezing cabin in December.
Winter salt is what actually kills a Land Rover, so a fresh coat of chassis wax before the roads are gritted is time well spent. Feed the door and sunroof seals so they do not freeze shut, and check wipers, washer strength and every exterior light. A quick run down this list beats a recovery truck every time.
