One wrong digit and the part will not fit — and "it looks the same" is exactly how a Saturday job becomes a fortnight waiting on a return. On a model line that ran for decades with constant running changes, your VIN is the cheapest insurance in the parts game. Learn to read it and you stop guessing.
A Land Rover VIN is seventeen characters that encode the model, body, engine, model year and assembly plant, plus a unique serial. You rarely need all of it, but the middle section — the model and engine codes — is what a parts desk actually uses to separate a 2.4 from a 2.2 or a 90 from a 110. Photograph the plate and the stamped chassis number; they should match.
Land Rover part numbers changed style over the years — from the old six-character codes like STC or AMR to longer LR-prefixed numbers on later cars, with Allmakes, Britpart and Bearmach adding their own equivalents. Two numbers often point to the same part because of supersessions, where a newer number officially replaces an older one. A good parts desk tracks those; a marketplace listing usually does not.
Give the VIN, describe the symptom as well as the part, and check both sides where a component is handed. For anything that changed mid-year — brakes, suspension, electrics — quote the build date, not just the model year, because a car built in the changeover month can take either version. Two minutes of this on the phone saves the return postage and the lost weekend.
Beware mid-year break points. Many components change on a specific chassis number, not on 1 January — the parts desk needs that number to pick the right side of the change.
