Tyre pressures: the free upgrade

The cheapest traction mod you own is already fitted. Airing down properly, and the numbers we actually run.

People spend two thousand euro on tyres and then run them at motorway pressure through a sand wash. Airing down is free, it is reversible in ten minutes, and on most surfaces it will do more for you than the next tread pattern up.

Why lower pressure works

A softer tyre lengthens its contact patch rather than widening it, so you get more edges in contact with more surface, and the carcass deforms around rocks instead of climbing over them. It also stops the tyre acting like a paddle in soft ground, which is what digs you in.

The numbers we run

On a loaded Defender or Discovery we start from about 2.5 bar on the road. Forest track and gravel: 1.8. Mud and rocks at low speed: 1.4. Deep sand: 1.0, and slower than you think. Below about 0.8 bar you are relying on the bead alone and a sharp steering input will unseat it.

Safety note

Low pressure and speed do not mix. A soft tyre at 80 km/h builds heat in the sidewall fast, and the failure is a sidewall, not a puncture. Air up before you rejoin the road, every time.

Getting the air back

Whatever you carry to let air out, carry something serious to put it back. A cheap compressor will take twenty minutes a corner and then overheat on the fourth. A proper twin-cylinder unit does the set in under ten, and that difference is what decides whether you actually air down next time or just talk about it.

The best traction upgrade most people own is a tyre gauge they never use.
