Td5 vs TDCi: which Defender engine to live with
The last two Defender diesels split every owner. We put the five-cylinder Td5 and the Ford-era TDCi side by side on reliability, running costs and the drive itself.
Manufacturer intervals were written for a warranty period. Here is what we recommend for a Land Rover you intend to keep.
Long service intervals are a sales feature. They are calculated for a car that will be traded at four years old, on good fuel, driven mostly on motorways. Almost nothing about that describes a Land Rover in Bulgaria, and the schedule that keeps one alive to 300,000 km is noticeably tighter.
Whatever the book says, we change diesel engine oil at 10,000 km or annually. Short runs, cold starts and dusty tracks all shorten oil life, and on any engine with a DPF the fuel dilution from regeneration cycles is real. Oil is the cheapest fluid in the car and the only one protecting the most expensive part.
Coolant every five years, brake fluid every two, gearbox and axle oil every 60,000 km, transfer box the same, power steering when it stops being red. Brake fluid is the one people argue about and the one that quietly boils on a long descent with a loaded truck.
An annual service is a date, not a distance. A Land Rover that covers 4,000 km a year still needs its oil, brake fluid and coolant changed on time — standing still is harder on fluids than driving is.
Swivel and hub seals for weeping, propshaft UJs and the sliding joint for play, every bush that carries a spring or a radius arm, the exhaust mounts, and the earth straps. None of these are on a service schedule and all of them are cheap while they are still just a note on a job sheet.
A service schedule protects the warranty. A maintenance habit protects the car.
