Td5 vs TDCi: which Defender engine to live with
The last two Defender diesels split every owner. We put the five-cylinder Td5 and the Ford-era TDCi side by side on reliability, running costs and the drive itself.
Two unrelated things failing at once is almost never two faults. It is a shared earth, and there is a fast way to find it.
The classic Land Rover electrical call is not "this does not work". It is "the indicators flash when I brake and the dashboard lights dim". That is not a fault in either circuit. That is current going home the wrong way because the proper way home is corroded.
Every circuit needs a return to the battery negative. When a shared earth point goes high-resistance, the current looks for another route — and the only routes available are through other circuits' earths. That is why the fault appears in a component that is completely healthy, and why replacing that component changes nothing.
Forget resistance readings; a corroded joint can read a fraction of an ohm and still fail under load. Put the circuit under load, then measure voltage between the component's earth and the battery negative. Anything above about 0.2 V is your fault, and you can walk the meter back joint by joint until the reading collapses.
On a Defender check the engine-to-chassis and chassis-to-body straps first, and the bulkhead earths behind the dash second. Those four points explain most of the electrical work we do.
Clean to bright metal on both faces, not just the ring terminal. Use a star washer so the joint bites through any future oxide, and seal the finished joint with grease or paint. A wire-brushed earth that has been left bare will be back within two winters.
Nine out of ten electrical faults are mechanical: a joint, not a component.
