Td5 vs TDCi: which Defender engine to live with
The last two Defender diesels split every owner. We put the five-cylinder Td5 and the Ford-era TDCi side by side on reliability, running costs and the drive itself.
Bigger discs are the last thing to buy, not the first. The order we recommend, and why fluid comes before hardware.
Almost every "my brakes are not good enough" conversation ends with the same finding: the brakes are fine and the system around them is tired. A loaded Defender on a mountain descent does not need bigger discs; it needs everything it already has to be working properly.
Brake fluid absorbs water, and water boils. Two-year-old fluid in a truck that tows will boil on a long descent and give you a pedal that goes to the floor and then comes back — which is the most frightening thing brakes do. Fresh fluid to the correct specification costs almost nothing and fixes most complaints outright.
Old rubber hoses swell under pressure, which is where a soft pedal comes from; braided lines fix that for the price of an afternoon. Only then does pad compound matter — and for a heavy truck the answer is usually a pad that works cold rather than a race compound that needs heat you will never put into it.
Check the sliders and the handbrake shoes while everything is apart. A seized caliper slider makes one pad do all the work, and no upgrade fixes a caliper that only half-releases.
Genuinely: when you are consistently at maximum weight, towing near the limit, on long descents, with everything above already sorted. At that point a vented disc conversion buys you thermal capacity, which is the only thing extra size actually gives you. Buying it first buys you nothing but a heavier wheel.
Brakes do not run out of grip. They run out of somewhere to put the heat.
